Recreation director outlines cameras, internet and new programs at Cameron County center

Sophia Fragale, Cameron County Recreation Director, told the county commissioners on Aug. 8 that staff have installed cameras at playgrounds after recent vandalism and are working to add internet access at playground sites to improve safety and program capabilities. Fragale said the county coordinated with volunteer Dave Meritt on the camera installations and described the measures as both vandalism deterrence and a safety feature for children and families.
Fragale outlined current programming at the Recreation Center, including a weekly Friday collaboration with Prospect Park and plans for a new 5th and 6th grade girls basketball program. She said Heidi Johnson has volunteered to coach the girls program this year and that the center hired a temporary staffer to cover the game room while Jessica is out; Fragale said Jessica is expected to return to work in two weeks.
The update also noted the recreation facility is out for bid for a roof replacement; Fragale and county officials said the goal for longer-term revitalization is to convert the center into a community hub that could offer remote-work space and telehealth conferencing in a private meeting room. Commissioners said they are awaiting results of a BEAD grant application and a Strategic Management Planning (STMP) grant to evaluate finances and guide future operations.
The presentation was made during the public comment portion of the Aug. 8 meeting and required no formal action by the board. The county will bring the roof bids to a future meeting when the bid-opening occurs.
