Recreation director asks Cameron County to consider paying playground supervisor wages; commissioners refer request to solicitor

Sophia Fragale, identified in the record as the county Recreation Director, asked the Cameron County Board of Commissioners on May 9 to partner with the Prospect Park Playground Association and consider covering wages for the association’s hired summer supervisor.

Fragale told the board that sign-ups for playground activities are posted, a supervisor is hired to start June 3, 2024, and that the Third Street Playground fence had been repaired. She asked whether the county would assume the supervisor’s wages for the 2024 season as part of a partnership with the association and the Third Street and South Park playground supervisors.

Commissioners did not commit to paying wages at the meeting. Instead, they asked Fragale to coordinate a meeting with the Prospect Park Playground Association and the county solicitor so that outstanding issues — insurance, available funding sources and legal authority for county payment to a private association — can be resolved before any county action.

Why it matters: If the county eventually agrees to cover wages, it would create an ongoing personnel or contractual cost obligation and raise insurance and procurement questions that the board correctly referred to the solicitor for review.

What’s next: Fragale will arrange the meeting with the association and the solicitor; commissioners will await solicitor guidance before considering any formal action or funding commitment.
