Cameron County seeks strategic management planning grant; commissioners discuss safety, tourism and infrastructure

Cameron County commissioners told constituents on June 27 they have applied for a Strategic Management Planning Grant (STMP) through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to bring consultants in for a multi‑year financial and operational plan covering the past five years and proposing three‑to‑five year recommendations.
Commissioner Herzing said the application included a hardship letter to reduce the county’s required match if the grant is awarded. She said the grant could fund an analysis of revenues, expenditures and staffing that would identify opportunities to strengthen county finances and economic development planning. Herzing also recounted safety recommendations discussed with staff, including installing a generator at the courthouse to maintain emergency operations and protect building assets.
Commissioner Zucal described work to boost tourism and noted a conversation with Nathan Rigner of the State Department of Recreation about implementation funds; he said the State has $15 million available for recreation projects with the potential to grow in coming years. Commissioner Moate said the county was awarded a Brownfield assessment grant this year and has toured county sites with the assisting company; he also reported an ongoing effort to upgrade courthouse Wi‑Fi pending a contractor quote.
Operational updates from the Chief Clerk included moving ACT 13 to twice‑yearly application rounds, hiring a recycling aid who will start July 1, the recycling center’s purchase of a portable toilet for staff, and plans to install cameras at county properties after a string of vandalism incidents. The clerk also said the county is working with Public Defenders on an Indigent Grant to fund public defender wages and fees and that the courthouse will be closed July 5 as approved by the court administrator.
Commissioners did not take formal action on the STMP or generator at this meeting; those ideas were presented as potential next steps and contingent on grant awards or further planning.
