Superintendent reports heating problems, enrollment shifts and grant activity

At the Feb. 3 Scotland Board of Education meeting Superintendent Valerie Bruneau updated the board on facilities, staffing projections, grants and public-health training.
Bruneau said extreme cold and gelled fuel have strained the building heating system, producing clogged filters and at least one failed oil pump; maintenance staff have been working to maintain heat and the board authorized emergency spending to address repairs. She said budget projections foresee one staff reduction and that she is coordinating with the first selectman on use of 2% funds and capital-fund options to offset unplanned costs. Bruneau said the district is pursuing an After School Grant and that an Eversource RLE energy-efficiency grant is on hold due to minimal projected savings.
Principal Ann Knowles reported that PreK enrollment is up, with some out-of-town students currently enrolled and recruiting continuing; SBAC practice testing for grades 3–6 will begin in spring and health/CPR training for grades 5–6 occurred today. The minutes note a recent Narcan training and a second session scheduled for the following Tuesday.
Finance Coordinator Michele Demicco reported that 52.8% of the district budget had been spent to date; the board voted to accept the financial report under motion #3-25/26. The board planned a preliminary budget presentation for the March meeting.
