Smithfield council approves minutes, hears project updates and event plans

At its March 11 meeting the Smithfield City Council approved meeting minutes from Feb. 11 and Feb. 25, 2026 by a 5-0 vote and heard a series of staff and council reports on capital projects, community events and local business developments.
The minutes approval came on a motion by Councilmember Todd Orme, seconded by Councilmember John Engler, and passed unanimously. City Manager Justin Lewis updated the council on capital projects: a 3-million-gallon water tank with substantial completion expected in November 2026, the 1000 South stormwater Phase 1 project out to bid, and a spring waterline project likely to be advertised in April. Lewis also noted the first departmental budget meeting is scheduled for March 25.
Councilmembers reported on committees and upcoming events: Todd Orme noted Arbor Day poster contest planning and Douglass Mercantile renovation work; Jenn Staker previewed a chalk-art festival during Health Days and two summer concerts in June; Chris Olsen highlighted Youth Council participation and food pantry operations; and Mayor Aaron Rudie reported on traffic signal coordination with UDOT and new local businesses including a Jiffy Lube and a Taco Bell expected to open on South Main.
