CTDOT updates Route 6/61 roundabout plan; town asks for diverse plantings and local maintenance agreement

At the Feb. 10 Board of Selectmen meeting, First Selectman Paul Zulpa summarized a CTDOT review of the Route 6/Route 61 roundabout project and described several substantive changes since the public information meeting.
Zulpa said CTDOT reviewed a color plan that shows the full replacement of Bridge No. 01980, a temporary bypass modification adjacent to Route 6 that will avoid using Lynn’s Corner Road, and the removal of retaining walls from the roundabout design. The town requested that the center and splitter islands be planted with diverse tree species — ideally pollinator-friendly plantings — to reduce the risk of disease spreading across a single species. The Shade Tree and Sidewalks Committee will be asked to advise on species selection.
CTDOT timing and maintenance: Zulpa said the project is now slated to start in 2028. He said the Project Authorization Letter (PAL) will define which maintenance tasks fall to the town (for example, any lighting in the center island, maintenance of center- and splitter-island landscaping, snow removal and maintenance of concrete sidewalks and ramps), while normal roadway lighting is expected to remain the State’s responsibility.
Public engagement: The Route 6 Corridor Study Committee and the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments will host a public information meeting Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Woodbury Senior Community Center; the presentation and agenda will be posted on the town website and a Zoom option will be available.
What’s next: The board asked for Shade Tree and Sidewalks Committee input on plantings and noted that the PAL will clearly assign maintenance responsibilities. The town will continue coordination with CTDOT as design details and schedules are refined.
