Shade Tree committee proposes renaming Cannon Green and installing pollinator plantings; budget ~ $12,100

The Shade Tree & Sidewalk Committee presented a plan to renovate Cannon Green—proposing the new name Veterans Memorial Green—to improve memorial visibility, accessibility and the site's ecological value ahead of America250 celebrations.
"The renaming recognizes the service and sacrifice of Woodbury's veterans and affirms the Green's role as a dignified memorial landscape for the community," Anne Ryan, chair of the Shade Tree & Sidewalk Committee, said during her presentation. Ryan credited Pomperaug Valley Garden Club design work and outlined plantings intended to provide seasonal color and pollinator habitat.
The committee provided a line-item estimate that totaled approximately $12,100, including spring and fall plantings, soil amendments, signage and a modest maintenance allowance. Ryan said the project will rely on community volunteers, Master Gardener guidance, the Pomperaug Valley Garden Club's stewardship and partnerships with Parks & Recreation and Public Works.
The board discussed property ownership status: First Selectman Paul Zulpa said the South Green is state-owned and the town submitted the required forms to the General Assembly on Feb. 20 to request conveyance (the March 2 deadline was noted). If the conveyance is approved, the town intends to finalize an easement and bring project authorizations to the Planning Commission and Town Meeting.
A motion to recommend creation of a special revenue account for the Shade Tree & Sidewalk Committee's South/Cannon Green grant project was entered by Selectman Richard Coates and seconded by Selectman Karen Reddington-Hughes; minutes record the recommendation but do not record a final vote, and the recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Finance.
Next steps include Board of Finance consideration of the special revenue account, planning commission review of any easement, and volunteer coordination for planting in spring.
