Benton County commission approves grants, appointments and budget adjustments in routine session

Benton County commissioners approved a series of routine resolutions on Jan. 21, adopting budget adjustments, appointments and policy updates during a regularly scheduled meeting at the county courthouse.
Among the actions the commission approved by roll-call votes (mostly 16 Aye, 0 No, 2 Absent) were: naming a stretch of U.S. Highway 641 North near Camden after Chief Deputy Michael W. Lockhart (Resolution 20250121-01); budget adjustments for the sheriff’s office ($775); multiple school grants and reimbursements totaling $19,954.29 across resolutions sponsored by Mark Florence (20250121-04 through 20250121-07); appointment of Johnny Belisle to the Benton County Airport Board (20250121-08); an $8,000 TCad grant allocation for the Benton County Senior Center (20250121-09); authorization for Candy Eaton to pursue grants for the county animal shelter for 2% compensation (20250121-10); updates to the county travel policy setting per‑diem caps and tying mileage to the state rate (20250121-11); and appropriations to cover a Clerk & Master property sale obligation ($98,417.54) and an airport aviation fuel shortfall ($50,000) among other budget amendments (20250121-12, -16).
The commission also amended and approved funding for services from Community Development Partners, increasing the originally proposed amount from $5,500 to $9,500 (20250121-14). Notary appointments were approved by voice vote (Sherry J. Elendt, Amanda Joy Butcher, Ashley Morgan McHan, Glenda L. Phillips and Emma Lydia Wyatt). The commission suspended the rules to consider Resolution 20250121-17 opposing the state Education Freedom Act and passed that resolution separately.
All actions described above are recorded in the meeting minutes and were passed as motions carried at the Jan. 21 session; where roll-call tallies are noted in the packet they appear as recorded. The commission announced a special called Budget Committee meeting for Jan. 30, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. and then adjourned.
