Deming airport staff outline Taxiway 8 design work and runway maintenance; FAA gives no firm construction date

At the Oct. 14, 2025 meeting of the Deming Airport Commission, Community Development Director Jeremy Gervais said design work is under way for rehabilitation of Taxiway 8 and that pavement maintenance on Runway 8-26 is planned, including crack sealing and broader taxiway reconstruction. He told commissioners the FAA has reviewed the airport but could not commit to a construction start date, saying only that work would likely occur "some time next year."
Gervais said the airport has ongoing ground maintenance and that runway cracks need repair. He said the city must consult Jane at DOT Aviation about the appropriate runway sealer because it may differ from the regular crack sealer used on city streets. "I need to reach out to DOT, Jane at DOT Aviation, because I was not sure of the type of material they use for the runway," he said to commissioners during the meeting record.
Felipe Figueroa noted the FAA program managers covering the region (Kimberly Harris and James Fuller) recently visited the airport; according to the minutes the FAA commended Deming as one of the stronger airports in the Southwest. Commissioners and staff discussed timing and procurement: Gervais said the city is working with Bixby Electric and is awaiting a finalized quote through CES for a new swiveling down beacon as part of broader electrical and airfield improvements.
Why it matters: pavement and taxiway work affects operational safety and tenant access; scheduling and funding will determine when aircraft operations might face closures or work-zone restrictions. Gervais said the FAA has not given a construction date, so airport users should expect further updates as designs and federal coordination advance.
