City Administrator Kevin Bronson told the Westminster City Council on Feb. 10 that the city has issued a notice to proceed to Foothills Contracting LLC for the downtown streetscape project and that work may begin as early as Feb. 16.
"They are set to start February 16," Bronson said, adding that crews will likely work first on the Grama Street segment and the Gray Street block between Main and North Avenue. "Once we close it, it'll be closed for vehicular traffic going forward. The new design caused that to be for pedestrian access only. Main Street should not be affected during that time." (Kevin Bronson, City Administrator)
Bronson warned the council that the schedule depends on weather and that contractors have rain days available. He said staff will place signs and distribute 11x17 copies of the new street design to downtown businesses and post phasing and schedule information on the city website and the city's Facebook page.
The administrator also said the grant supporting the project calls for completion the week before the Apple Festival but cautioned organizers and merchants to prepare for the area to be unavailable if weather or construction delays occur.
Mayor and council members asked staff to coordinate directly with affected businesses. The mayor offered to hand-deliver printed maps to downtown merchants when staff provides them.
What happens next: Bronson said the contractor owes the city a detailed schedule now that notice to proceed has been issued and that staff will publish that schedule and additional outreach materials as soon as they receive it.
