The Planning & Zoning Board on Jan. 6 approved a facade-sign variance (P250206) for Mid Florida Credit Union to add a non-illuminated wall sign on a south elevation that faces residential areas. Staff demonstrated that the site's configuration, landscaping and utilities limit effective monument sign placement, and that an additional wall sign improves visibility from Rosser Avenue.
Marissa Leshman (planning staff) explained the site's permitted aggregate sign area (152 sq ft based on linear frontage) and said the proposed south-wall sign (75.63 sq ft) would expand the aggregate to 210.07 sq ft, exceeding the code by 58.07 sq ft. Applicant representative Gina/Jean Penny (Atlas Signs) said the request reflected the minimum relief needed for the credit union to be visible to motorists approaching from Rosser Avenue; Penny emphasized the sign would be non-illuminated.
Board members asked whether the bank could instead install or use a monument sign; staff and the applicant said site constraints and setbacks limit monument placement and could reduce parking if attempted. After brief discussion the board approved the variance; staff noted the sign must conform to non-illumination and other code standards.
