Fire chief urges continued support for burn ban; council issues memorial, recognition and awareness proclamations

Hernando County Fire Chief Paul Hassmeyer told the Brooksville City Council the countywide burn ban that has been in place since Jan. 8 was prompted by unusually early dry conditions and that recent rains have reduced brush-fire activity. "We're hoping for a little bit more rain," Hassmeyer said, and he asked residents to support the burn ban because many outside burning incidents are caused by human error.

The council then issued several proclamations. Councilman Hallow (S4) read a proclamation honoring the life and service of longtime city employee Mark Myler; Richard Weeks (S7) described Myler as "a role model to the city of Brooksville" and expressed condolences to the family.

The council recognized winners of the annual Brooksville Outdoor Conservation Alliance squirrel hunt (held Feb. 21, 2026). Michelle Payne (S9) told the council the event, now in its sixth year, drew 202 teams and 203 youth participants and was dedicated to the late Jason Willis. Payne said the event emphasizes adult mentorship, ethical harvesting, conservation and youth involvement.

Councilmember McKeithen (S5) read a proclamation naming March 2026 employee appreciation week; Kyle Martin (S11) accepted and described staff activities and noted the city received $10,000 in Cigna funds to support wellness activities. The council also proclaimed March 9–15, 2026 Flood Awareness Week; David Hanley (S12) accepted on behalf of the Florida Floodplain Managers Association and urged residents to know their flood-zone status and "drive around, don't drown."
