Coweta delays Project Atlas hearings; resident voices property-rights and rate concerns

Project Atlas public hearings were rescheduled (Planning Commission Jan. 19, 2026; City Council Feb. 2, 2026). Resident Darren Blanchard raised concerns about property rights, easements, industrialization impacts, national security and potential utility rate increases and referenced about 700 petition signatures.
City staff told the Coweta City Council on Dec. 1 that the developer of Project Atlas, a proposed data center, requested an additional month in the review process. The Planning Commission public hearing is now scheduled for Jan. 19, 2026, and the City Council public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 2, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. at ICTC.
During the presentations portion of the meeting, resident Darren Blanchard addressed the council and raised several objections to Project Atlas. According to the minutes, Blanchard expressed concerns about property rights and easements, the potential industrialization of rural areas, national-security implications and possible increases to utility rates. He also said an online petition opposing aspects of the project collected about seven hundred signatures. The minutes do not record staff responses or any council action in response to those claims.
Council staff also provided additional project and infrastructure updates: bids for the Police Station and Fire Station No. 1 were extended to allow additional bidder questions, with bid reviews and anticipated contract awards in January and groundbreakings to follow; progress on the 121st Street Bridge is delayed pending right-of-way negotiations with property owners; a dedicated left-turn signal was installed at 141st Street South and SH-51 to improve safety and traffic flow; 257th East Avenue reconstruction is slated to begin with a 180-day completion window; and the Coweta Casino Hotel interior was toured with an anticipated early-March opening.
No formal action on Project Atlas occurred at the Dec. 1 meeting; the public hearings will be the next formal opportunities for public testimony and council consideration.
