Board reviews facilities work: jumbotron, Early Learning Center conversion and security upgrades

The Buildings & Grounds committee reported a spring installation of a video-only jumbotron at Tullahoma High (quarterback club purchase), the conversion of a Fair building to an Early Learning Center after a State Fire Marshal certificate of occupancy, donated digital signage from Wellworth Bank, parking-lot RFPs, and a public-school security grant to upgrade door locks at East Middle School.

At Tullahoma High School the quarterback club purchased a new video-only jumbotron expected to be installed in spring; the committee said time, score and other game statistics will be maintained on a separate traditional scoreboard. The quarterback club also requested to remove a current wall of support and replace it with a digital sign donated by Wellworth Bank that will scroll club sponsors. The committee said TCS maintenance and TUA are coordinating electrical service for the installations.
Lawson reported the State Fire Marshal's Office issued a certificate of occupancy for both the new and existing Jack T. Fair buildings on Dec. 22. Planning is underway to convert the former Fair building into an Early Learning Center, a project that will involve coordination among TCS technology, maintenance, finance, and pre-K programs.
The committee discussed a West Middle School request to install a donated storage shed for track equipment and provided feedback on a courtyard improvement project at Robert E. Lee that awaits a concrete slab and walkway. RFPs are out to repair and reseal parking lots at Robert E. Lee, Bel Air and East Middle this fiscal year, with plans for additional lots next fiscal year.
Lawson also reported that work to upgrade interior door locks at East Middle is scheduled for spring break and will be funded through a public-school security grant. The district's new transportation office within the Maintenance Building has passed final inspections (completed in December).
Board member Pat Welsh cautioned that some jumbotron installations that also display time and score can cause lengthy game delays if technical issues arise; the committee emphasized that the district intends to keep those elements on a separate scoreboard to avoid stopping the game.
Next steps: proceed with electrical coordination, schedule spring installations, complete RFP evaluations and continue Early Learning Center conversion planning.
