The Scotland Board of Selectmen voted at its July 23 meeting to sell the Bass Road Bridge to The Nature Conservancy for $25,000.
Selectman Michael Gurnack moved to accept the conservancy’s offer; Selectman Bart Laws seconded and the motion carried. The board said The Nature Conservancy will remove the bridge and transport it to a new location.
The board is also moving forward with bridge-related planning: it said it will hire a bridge inspection team for Bass Road Bridge (inspection costs to be reimbursed by grant funds) and continues to work with state officials on grant financing for other bridge projects. The board noted Kemp Road Bridge construction may be delayed to 2028 because of scheduling constraints and multiple bridge projects in 2026–27.
The sale was presented as a way to relocate the historic structure while the town focuses on grant-funded repairs and inspections of its remaining bridges. The selectmen did not provide a public vote tally beyond recording that the motion carried.
