Scotland schools report PreK enrollment gains, ESY success; universal PreK planning continues

Superintendent Valerie Bruneau reported at the Aug. 5 meeting that the district’s Extended School Year (ESY) program went “very well,” drawing positive comments and visits from families in three neighboring towns considering the program for their districts.
Bruneau also said universal PreK planning is underway. The district’s PreK program boosted enrollment with nearly a dozen families from five towns expressing interest; the district anticipates adding another staff member and continuing a co-teaching model. Bruneau said universal PreK is expected in 2027 and that the district continues to market its PreK offering.
An Afterschool grant application has been delayed by about one month, and the district is pursuing other funding supports: Bruneau said she reached out to Cathy Osten for ESY funding assistance and noted a planned Oct. 4 Local Governance Partnership rollout with SERAC and 22 presenters as part of prevention and community-engagement efforts.
Principal Ann Knowles said the PreK Boot Camp attracted out-of-town families, curriculum updates for K–3 math are being implemented, SBAC family reports will arrive after scores come in September, and the school will hold Open House Aug. 26 from 4–5:30 p.m. with the first full day of school the following day.
The Board discussed outreach and housing market context briefly (Zoning meeting contact about families considering moving to Scotland) and plans a Meet & Greet at the Open House.
