Public commenters urge more spay/neuter vouchers and report high community outreach numbers

At the start of the meeting the council opened the public-input period, allowing up to three minutes per speaker. Sandy Foster said the city’s May "Cinco De Dogo" event resulted in 42 adoptions and intake of 114 animals and that the shelter had been approved for a $30,000 spay-and-neuter grant, equivalent to about 240 vouchers; Foster said only 23 vouchers remain available and that staff have applied for a second grant.

Rebecca Hughes of Mainstreet reported positive feedback for a downtown barrel project, said Camp Cody was a "huge success" and previewed National Night Out and a downtown cleaning event. Jan Millis of Project Communidad provided a quarterly report saying the organization reached 3,283 households and 6,900 individuals — which she said represented about 27 percent of Luna County in two days — and noted ongoing grant applications. Christy Ann Harvey, District 3 Commissioner, updated the council on technical classes at the local college and thanked the city for support.

Steve Fox of I-10 Chevron told the council he received a letter from City Attorney Spenser Baca stating the city is unwilling to sell a parcel because a sewer line runs through it; Fox suggested an easement that would use less of the 7,900-square-foot site. The council did not take formal action on the property issue during the meeting.
