Adair County approves $261,548.23 in claims and continues FY27 budget discussion

The Adair County Board of Supervisors approved claims totaling $261,548.23 on Feb. 18 and continued a FY27 budget work session that included discussion of a potential hiring freeze.

The claims list, accepted unanimously, assigned $190,131.95 to the Secondary Road Fund and $39,933.28 to the General Fund, among other fund allocations. Notable single line items included $67,276.94 for January fuel (Agriland Fs Inc) and $103,094.87 for maintenance rock (Schildberg Construction Co. Inc.). The meeting record shows a grand total of $261,548.23 across multiple funds and accounts.

Supervisor Christoffersen raised concerns about lower fund balances compared with prior years and suggested supervisors set their own raises at 0% for FY27 as an example. The board later approved a 0% raise for supervisors for FY27; Christoffersen said the board intends to maintain a 2.8% increase for other county employees to help preserve purchasing power.

The board also discussed a possible hiring freeze as a tool for controlling FY27 expenses. No specific hiring actions were taken at the meeting. Dominic Johnson joined the meeting via conference call during the session; his participation was noted in the minutes.
