The Human Resources & Information Technologies Committee voted to amend the city’s salary administration policy to provide a $25 flat premium for community service officers (CSOs) who serve as field training officers during a shift.
Director Rachman, who presented the change, said the premium is intended to recognize CSOs who take on training duties and to provide an incentive for experienced CSOs to continue supervising new hires. “So it’s a win win,” Rachman said, adding that the city estimates the annual cost at about $4,000 and that the police department can absorb the expense within its existing CSO budget.
Alder Arthur Jones sought clarification on how the premium would be paid: “So just to confirm, their shift pay goes up to 25. It is not a 25 on top of what they were making,” Jones asked. Rachman confirmed the premium is a flat $25 for the entire shift, not a per-hour supplement.
The committee recorded the motion and approved the amendment and the updated policy; the recorded outcome on the item was 4 yes, 2 no, 0 abstentions.
The change affects CSOs acting specifically in a field training role during a shift; the committee did not add funding to the police budget for the premium and the city said the program will be managed within existing appropriations. The committee did not set a sunset date for the premium.
The committee moved on to other agenda items; staff said they would implement the updated policy through payroll and schedule communications with affected departments.
