D2 Appleton manager apologizes for demerit violations, offers training to prevent repeat

The Safety and Licensing Committee heard from Brent Mack, who identified himself as “the General Manager and also 1 of the owners of the place,” about a demerit-point violation tied to his downtown business, D2 Appleton.

Mack told the committee he and his staff take security seriously but acknowledged negligence in the incident that prompted the hearing. He said the employees who were working the front door “are no longer work for us,” and that the business uses binders of high-quality fake IDs as part of staff training. “We have some binders that are full of fake IDs. We kinda use those for training purposes,” Mack said, and added he is willing to provide training on identifying fake IDs to other downtown establishments.

Mack also described efforts to reinforce procedures: daily staff communications, printed reminders by each till, refresher meetings with the Appleton Police Department and use of ID scanners — though he said scanners can be fooled by new, sophisticated fake IDs. “We scanned ones from that book and they all came up as real,” he said, describing how different scanners produced different results.

The committee asked no substantive follow-up questions. The chair thanked Mack for appearing and for the steps he described to reduce future violations. No formal sanction or additional committee action was recorded in the transcript from the appearance.
