Superintendent reports enrollment, safety audit results and operational upgrades

At the Sept. 15 meeting, Superintendent Dr. Brian Nichols reported Canton ISD enrollment at 2,263 students with a 97.2% attendance rate and provided campus-level enrollment counts: Canton High School 659, Canton Junior High 554, Canton Intermediate School 524 and Canton Elementary School 526.
Dr. Nichols told trustees that Region 10 conducted an Intruder Detection Audit at Canton Junior High on Sept. 2 and that no findings were detected. He also announced the district will transition from the SecurTech silent panic alert system to the RAPTOR Alert System; the RAPTOR installation will include beacons intended to allow emergency personnel to pinpoint the location of an activated alert.
Operations items included an order for a new 77-passenger bus from Longhorn Bus Sales to support transportation needs and an upgrade to the Larry Davis Auditorium lighting system, replacing a 20-year-old Unison control with a Paradigm control system and a new dimmer rack; the upgrade includes a three-year warranty and prepares for a future LED transition. The superintendent also reported the district’s first Teacher Incentive Allotment committee meeting was Aug. 27, with a second meeting scheduled for Sept. 24.
Board materials included upcoming athletic dates; the minutes note adjustments to parking and visitor logistics because of ongoing construction of the new high school complex.
