Stewart County commissioners raise mileage rate to $0.70, commit to Rood Creek Park winter cleaning; hotel/motel ordinance not adopted

Stewart County commissioners on Aug. 12, 2025, voted to raise the county mileage reimbursement rate to $0.70 per mile and approved an annual winter-cleaning commitment for Rood Creek Park intended for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The board also accepted July financial and EMS reports and conducted a second reading of a Hotel/Motel Tax ordinance that was not adopted.
Vice-Chair Thomas Mayo moved to increase the mileage reimbursement from $0.67 to $0.70 per mile; Commissioner MaQuonzie Thomas seconded. The motion carried unanimously. Commissioner Joe Lee Williams moved to accept the July 2025 financial reports; Vice-Chair Mayo seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Public Safety Administrator Greg Stewart presented the July EMS report, which the commission "accepted as submitted," according to the minutes; the minutes do not record a mover/second or a roll-call vote for that acceptance.
On a separate action, Chairwoman Arcola Scott moved that Stewart County provide yearly winter cleaning service for Rood Creek Park on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Commissioner MaQuonzie Thomas seconded and the board approved the measure unanimously. The Hotel/Motel Tax ordinance remained at its second reading and was not adopted at the Aug. 12 meeting; the minutes show no adoption or recorded vote on that ordinance.
Commissioners also raised several nonbinding items during comments. Commissioner MaQuonzie Thomas asked county staff for information about Windstream internet service in the county. Commissioner Joe Lee Williams asked whether the county could advertise to sell a parcel of land behind the city police department; County Manager Mac Moye provided information on topics covered July 9–Aug. 12, 2025, and County Attorney Bin Minter gave a legal update for the commission’s review. Vice-Chair Mayo praised recent fire-station construction, saying the board "have done a great job building the fire stations," and Chairwoman Scott said, "We will start setting dates next month to start looking over the budget."
