Stewart County adopts $6.65 million 2026 budget; approves contracts, reappointments and deputy magistrate

The Stewart County Board of Commissioners approved the county's 2026 budget of $6,645,560.55 during its Dec. 9, 2025 meeting at the Stewart County Courthouse and cleared several administrative items before adjourning at 5:20 p.m.
Commissioner Joe Lee Williams moved to adopt the 2026 budget; Vice-Chair Thomas Mayo seconded the motion, and the board voted unanimously to approve it. The approval followed a public hearing earlier in the afternoon at which no citizens attended.
The board also approved routine administrative items: the 2026 holiday schedule and the 2026 commissioner workshop and meeting schedule. Commissioners voted unanimously to accept an amendment to the county's agreement with CoreCivic after Commissioner Williams moved to accept the amendment and Vice-Chair Mayo seconded.
On county road work, the board accepted Oxford Construction's bid of $342,830.25 for 2025 LMIG projects on Holtz Claw Road and Moore's Store Road; that acceptance was conditioned on the engineer's decision. Commissioner Williams moved the bid acceptance and Commissioner Tyrone Nelson seconded; the motion carried.
Vice-Chair Thomas Mayo moved to reappoint Shaconda Screws, Tyneisha Nelson and Linda Ponder to four-year terms on the Board of Elections beginning Jan. 1, 2026 and running through Dec. 31, 2029. Four commissioners voted in favor; Commissioner Tyrone Nelson abstained. The motion carried.
In other business, Public Safety Administrator Greg Stewart presented the November EMS report. County Manager Mac Moye provided road department and county manager updates for the Nov. 11–Dec. 9 period, and County Attorney Bin Minter presented legal topics for the commission's review.
New business included a request from Magistrate Judge Canady Matthews to add a deputy magistrate to the magistrate court. Chairwoman Arcola Scott moved to approve the addition; Commissioner MaQuonzie Thomas seconded and the board approved the change unanimously.
The meeting concluded with seasonal comments from commissioners and a motion to adjourn by Commissioner Tyrone Nelson, seconded by Commissioner MaQuonzie Thomas. The meeting adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
