Stewart County commissioners approve de‑annexation of Wims Center, accept hazard plan and make reappointments

The Stewart County Board of Commissioners on July 8 at the Stewart County Courthouse unanimously adopted a resolution to de‑annex the Wims Center from the City of Lumpkin and approved several routine county actions, including reappointments to local boards and acceptance of a regional hazard mitigation plan.
The commission voted to adopt the de‑annexation resolution after a motion from Commissioner Joe Lee Williams and a second from Vice‑Chair Thomas Mayo. The board also approved Chairwoman Arcola Scott’s motions to reappoint Stonie Patterson to the Stewart County Water and Sewage Authority (term to June 2028) and Fannie Perrymond to the Stewart County Board of Family and Children Services (term to June 2027); both were seconded by Vice‑Chair Mayo and carried unanimously.
The board accepted the Pre‑Disaster Hazard Mitigation Plan developed between Stewart County and the River Valley Regional Commission, a procedural step to align county planning with regional mitigation efforts. Chairwoman Arcola Scott moved to accept the plan; Vice‑Chair Thomas Mayo seconded the motion, which passed on a unanimous voice vote.
Commissioners also handled routine business: they approved the June 2025 financial reports (motion by Commissioner Joe Lee Williams, seconded by Commissioner Tyrone Nelson), received the county manager’s report noting installation of a new landfill fence, and heard an EMS report from Public Safety Administrator Greg Stewart on ambulance purchases and the status of the EMS building.
Following the board’s votes, Chairwoman Arcola Scott read a proclamation declaring August 3–9, 2025, Community Health Center Week on behalf of Valley Health Care System. In commissioners’ comments, Scott praised new Tax Commissioner Shirley Walker for work collecting back taxes and thanked Extension staff and members of the Road Department by name for recent assistance during funerals held at the Wims Center.
