Crawford County emergency manager warns of extreme fire danger; how residents can check burn-ban status

Quinton Parsons, Crawford County’s emergency manager, told the Board of Commissioners on March 24 that area fire danger will be “high today, very high [tomorrow], and extreme [Thursday]” because of a lack of rain. He urged residents to follow burn-ban restrictions to protect themselves and local fire departments.
Parsons said residents can check the Crawford County Emergency Management Facebook page for burn-ban status, call the county burn-ban hotline at 620-724-6270, or sign up for automated alerts through the Genasys system; he said those alerts are sent around 8:00 a.m. each morning. Parsons also noted he placed burn-ban cards in the County Clerk’s office to help inform the public.
Commissioner Bruce Blair and Commissioner Carl Wood asked about coordination and public notice. Parsons said he posts to the Emergency Management Facebook page but does not have access to the county’s main Facebook account; County Counselor Jim Emerson confirmed the Emergency Management page can be cross-posted to the county page.
Parsons described the strain on local fire departments, saying they had been "super busy," and reminded residents that observed violations should be reported to county dispatch so enforcement and citation decisions can be pursued.
The Board did not take formal action during the presentation. The county’s emergency manager encouraged residents to sign up for Genasys alerts and to contact dispatch or the burn-ban hotline with questions.
