North Haledon engineering update: Squaw Brook stabilization underway, playground grant revised to $710,400

Borough Engineer Joseph Pomante (reporting Boswell’s work) said the Squaw Brook Road bank stabilization project has commenced after bids were reviewed and materials arrived, and that a NJDOT Local Aid municipal grant of $256,800 will fund rehabilitation for a portion of Squaw Brook Road. Work on the Overlook Avenue/High Mountain Road signal project is on hold until signal equipment is received, the minutes show.
The engineer also reported a Passaic County Open Space grant application to complete renovation of the High Mountain School playground. Boswell revised the engineer’s estimate for the playground to $710,400 (up from a previous $634,800 estimate), citing higher material, labor and inflation costs. The borough currently has $475,000 in funding from two earlier Passaic County grants and intends to request the remaining $235,400 in the 2025 grant cycle.
Why it matters: these projects affect local road safety, stormwater and recreational facilities. The minutes also note proposals prepared for the 2025 municipally funded road program to rehabilitate portions of Juniper Drive, Walnut Court, Tuxedo Court and Lakeview Drive, and a separate Manchester Avenue rehabilitation tied to a $273,406 NJDOT municipal aid award.
