Marlboro County declares state of emergency as winter storm approaches; shelter sites designated

Marlboro County Council on Jan. 21 approved Declaration #01-01-26, establishing a county state of emergency in advance of a significant winter storm expected to affect the southeastern United States.
County Administrator Wilson A. Clyburn warned the council that "the snow storm was going to be very serious with a loss of power," and said the county would open its community center to residents in need. Chad Cheras of the Planning Department told the council the Old Bingo Building would be available as a location for animals that need evacuation.
Councilmember Charles P. Midgley Jr. moved to approve the declaration; Steve Blackmon seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The declaration authorizes county resources and emergency measures while the county coordinates with state guidance cited in the meeting.
The minutes record the county's immediate operational measures (shelter opening and animal evacuation space) but do not list additional resource allocations or mutual aid commitments. County staff will implement the measures described and update the council as conditions warrant.
