Curriculum and instruction staff told the Birmingham Community Charter High District board that an esports course was approved as a one‑year pilot and will be treated as an A‑G elective credit. The presenter said Dan Haggerty prepared a full year‑long curriculum divided into units to teach esports with elements of computer science and study‑skill development.
The presenter described the class as more than "let’s just play games" and said the curriculum includes goal setting, study skills and community‑building elements. "If successful, if it's decided to continue, the discussion of if it'll be a CTE class or a PE class will be discussed," the presenter explained, noting that any future expansion into a certified CTE pathway would require additional approvals and credentialing.
Board members clarified credential requirements for teaching the pilot, and staff said the elective can be taught by holders of single‑subject credentials rather than a CTE credential. The board discussed how the pilot would fit into scheduling and whether coaching authorizations would be needed if the program expands into an extracurricular competitive team.
