CVUSD students head to KidWind world challenge; district spelling bee winners named

The Coachella Valley Unified School District recognized student achievements at Thursday's board meeting, honoring KidWind teams that swept podium positions at regional competitions and announcing eight teams invited to the 2026 KidWind World Challenge in Madison, Wisconsin.
District representatives and coaches called out teams by school and asked students and staff to come forward for photos and brief demonstrations of their turbines. "These students are not just building wind turbines, they are building confidence," the presenter said, praising hands-on STEM learning across elementary, middle and high schools.
Board members also recognized the district spelling bee runner-up Jasmine Lopez (Valley View Elementary) and champion Jaylene Contreras (North Shore Elementary), who will compete next at the Riverside County spelling bee later this month.
Trustees congratulated coaches and students and thanked teachers and program coordinators for supporting competitions and student enrichment programs. The recognitions preceded a lengthy public-comment period in which community members raised concerns about budget cuts, staffing and procurement.
