Superintendent highlights dual-credit growth, career pathways and student achievements across BASD

Superintendent Jill gave a broad report on district programs and student activities at the March 9 board meeting, highlighting partnerships and hands-on learning experiences across Burlington schools.
On dual-credit and college-pathways work, Jill said staff held a flex-period session with Gateway Technical College counselors attended by 65 students to share Start College Now/early college credit and Gateway Academy options. She described that session as a response to senior feedback wanting more information about dual-credit and career pathways.
Jill described classroom projects and partnerships that connect coursework to real-world contexts: AP Statistics students conducted a parking-lot data project to learn confidence intervals; Gateway FabLab instructor John Zirin is guiding BHS students through precision measurement and certification work; and BHS nursing assistant students (10 students) completed their Gateway-assisted course and clinicals, with final CNA exams to follow in a district lab.
She also noted arts and extracurricular successes: choir workshops, a Forensics team placing fifth at a tournament and multiple student honors in academic competitions; student clubs including a newly formed mental-health club; and athletics recognitions, including Wall of Fame inductees and individual athletic results.
Jill pointed to career-connected learning at multiple levels: Gateway visits for freshman career exploration, FabLab certification opportunities, and community collaborations such as Vessel Construction assisting STEM students building dog houses for local residents. She cast these activities as steps toward stronger college and career pathways and increased student engagement.
The superintendent closed by thanking staff and encouraging attendance at upcoming events, including Burlington High SchoolLegally Blonde the musical starting March 14.
