Modesto City Schools board opens Jan. 20 meeting, announces public-comment handling and moves into closed session

The Modesto City Schools Board opened its Jan. 20, 2026 meeting at 05:03 and, after a roll call that established a quorum, moved directly into closed session.

At the start of the meeting the chair announced procedures for public comment on closed-session items, saying: “Public comment regarding closed session items will be received before the board meeting goes into closed session.” The chair added that comments submitted by email or voicemail after the posting of the agenda or before noon on the day of the meeting “will not be read aloud, but have been transcribed and printed with copies provided to each board member and to the public,” and that those materials will be attached to the approved meeting minutes.

The roll call recorded Trustees Brown and Ervin as present and noted Trustee Lopez “may be in his way.” The chair said Trustee Mathesas would be absent; Trustees Marks, Vice President Daly and President Midea were present. With a quorum established, the chair asked whether there were any public comments on closed-session items; hearing none, the board convened into closed session.

No public agenda votes or decisions were recorded in the public portion of the meeting; the chair’s statement established the board’s public-comment procedure for closed-session matters and the board proceeded to its closed deliberations.
