Scotland schools report AC failure and high year-to-date spending as board approves financial report

Superintendent Valerie Bruneau told the Scotland Board of Education on May 6 that a failure of an air-conditioning coil poured water through a hallway ceiling and will require repairs estimated at $4,000 to $6,000. The superintendent said a separate kitchen plumbing issue was fixed quickly and that hallway tile replacement will occur after school ends.
Business staff reported that 81% of the district’s budget had been spent to date. Board member Clark Stearns questioned Repairs & Maintenance (account 54300) linked to HVAC work during the financial discussion. The board unanimously approved the Financial Report (Motion #2-24/25), moved by Kaitlyn Shafer and seconded by Gracie Martin.
Bruneau also updated the board on grant options: no immediate grants were available other than IDEA, and the district is exploring regional Early Start/School Readiness coordination with neighboring towns as well as applying for an Afterschool Grant for the coming year.
Board members did not take further budget votes beyond approving the report but recorded follow-up items to monitor R&M expenses and facility repairs ahead of summer projects.
