Regional District 11 adopts $7.39 million budget, schedules May referendum

Regional District Eleven’s Board of Education voted unanimously on April 1 to adopt a $7,386,184 budget for fiscal year 2025–26. Vice Chair Michael Smardon moved to approve the budget and Kathy Freed seconded; the motion carried without recorded opposition.
The board also called an Annual District Meeting and public hearing for Monday, May 5, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at the Parish Hill Middle/High School Library and voted to adjourn that meeting to a referendum on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the polling places in the towns of Chaplin, Hampton and Scotland. The referendum question to appear on the ballot is: “Shall the sum of $7,386,184 be appropriated for the operation and maintenance of the Regional District System for July 1st, 2025 through June 30th, 2026.”
The board made the budget decision after a budget forecast presentation by Jobina Miller and routine administrative reports. The minutes record the motion as moved by Vice Chair Michael Smardon and seconded by Kathy Freed; they do not include a roll-call vote listing each member’s vote but state the motion was unanimously approved.
Next steps: the district will hold the public hearing May 5 and the referendum May 6. Voters in Chaplin, Hampton and Scotland will decide whether to appropriate the proposed sum for district operations for the 2025–26 fiscal year.
