La Plata council approves letter supporting state capital grant for new library

Shannon Bland, development manager for the Charles County Public Library, asked the La Plata Town Council on March 24 for a letter of support to pursue FY 2028 capital grant funding from the Maryland State Library Agency for a planned new La Plata Library building.
Bland said the funding "will allow us to continue that project and be able to expand the services and the resources that we're able to provide for the La Plata community." Lloyd Jansen, the library's deputy director, joined Bland at the podium.
Council members praised the project as a long-running community priority. Councilman Goodwin noted the town recently approved the major site plan and described the library as a partnership among the state, county and town; several council members said they will support the letter when called for a voice vote. The mayor asked for an aye; the motion carried.
Why it matters: State capital grants are a common funding source for public library construction and can unlock local and county investments. The library project was described as moving toward procurement and design; council and staff said they will transmit the letter to county and state partners.
