At its March 24 meeting the San Marino Unified School District board received a first reading of Board Policy 5145.13, a proposed policy on the district’s response to immigration enforcement.
Dr. Lena Richter summarized the draft, saying the policy is drawn from CSBA and state guidance and follows recent state law and attorney‑general recommendations (as presented). The policy would distinguish judicial warrants from administrative requests, prohibit collection or disclosure of students’ immigration status, limit access to campuses and student records unless a judicial warrant or court order is presented (and even then urge legal counsel), and require staff training and superintendent reporting to the board of any such requests.
Richter told the board San Marino has not experienced such requests recently but presenting the policy affirms the district’s commitment to keeping campuses welcoming and protecting student privacy. The board will consider the policy again at its next regularly scheduled meeting with a recommendation for approval.
