The San Marino Unified School District board received a first reading of proposed Board Policy 6146.1, which sets out certificate of proficiency and high‑school‑equivalency rules and adds an alternate diploma pathway to comply with recent state legislation.
Rocky (presenter) told the board that the alternate pathway reflects work by special education teachers and requires 130 credits, compared with 230 credits for general education students. “The alternate pathway includes 130 credits, whereas our general education students are earning 230 credits,” the presenter said.
The policy also adds a paragraph that states any student suspended pursuant to the Education Code whose suspension dates overlap graduation may be precluded from participating in a graduation ceremony; staff noted parents may opt out of that exclusion. The presenters said the revisions were pulled from district guidance sources and Gamut and will return for a second reading and recommendation for approval.
Board members asked questions and received clarification; no formal action was taken at this meeting.
