Connolly Carabao describes PACE literacy and PBIS 'drip' point system; staff report fewer tardies and referrals

Claire Zapata, principal of Connolly Carabao High School, presented the PACE literacy initiative and a PBIS rewards program called "drip," which awards students points for Determination, Respect, Initiative and Punctuality. "It's a daily after school intervention program Monday through Friday from 2 to 03:00," Zapata said when describing an after‑school intervention option tied to credit recovery and academic supports.
Teacher Josh Wheeler presented data on the program’s behavioral impact: "Since we implemented our drip program this year, we've seen a decrease in discipline referrals and tardies," Wheeler said, and referenced a slide noting 39 fewer discipline referrals and about 2,500 fewer tardies from the start of the year through January. Students described spending drip points on field trips and other rewards, and staff outlined how digital point tracking and student budgeting of points work.
Zapata said the program has also launched a schoolwide literacy program called PACE, and staff described weekly walkthroughs, assessments and PBIS reinforcement aligned to instructional goals. Board members thanked the presenters and students for the demonstration; no formal action or funding decision was taken at the meeting.
