New Haven Academy highlights independent‑study model, MTSS supports and college connections

Abigail Coatsen, principal at New Haven Academy, told the school board that the site provides an independent‑study option for families who need flexibility while building in in‑person supports using a Multi‑Tiered System of Supports. "We use an independent study model to create individualized and personalized pathways for our students," Coatsen said.
Coatsen said targeted interventions, advisory sessions and workshops were added to deepen engagement and academic supports; she noted students can attend in‑person sessions for advisory, interventions and enrichment. Student presenters described how the in‑person meetings (twice weekly with a teacher) and the online Edgenuity platform help them stay organized and on track.
Coatsen said the site has prioritized college readiness through campus visits and resource fairs and that eight New Haven Academy students were enrolled this year in a Chabot College class through James Logan High School. She also reported that, at the time of the slide deck, students had made approximately 1,504 in‑person visits to campus for workshops and tiered supports.
Students said the flexible model helped them balance extracurricular commitments and individualized learning. The board received the presentation as information; there were no motions or votes tied to the presentation.
