District to surplus aging buses after HVIP grant; plans to add electric buses

District transportation staff asked the board to surplus a set of buses that have reached the end of useful life, including several first-generation Lion electric buses that are no longer serviceable because parts and manufacturer support are unavailable. Staff also announced a recent HVIP grant approval that provides roughly $218,000 per bus toward replacement costs on $500,000 vehicles, and noted matching funds from the Yolo-Solano Air Resources Board are pending.
The transportation director said Bluebird-made electric buses are next in line for purchase and that the district has already replaced eight buses this year with plans to add five more (the next five will be electric). Trustees asked about charging infrastructure; staff said upgrades and additional grant opportunities are underway to expand charging capacity.
The board approved a resolution to surplus unusable buses and accepted staff's plan to pursue replacements using the grant funding and budgeted contingencies.
