Los Banos Unified says ~2,300 students received glasses after districtwide vision screenings

Superintendent Doctor Ritchie and district health staff told the Los Banos Unified School District Board of Trustees on Sept. 24 that the district’s community schools initiative completed vision screenings across its sites and has provided glasses to roughly 2,300 students.
"At this point, the approximate number is about 2,300 students," Doctor Wheeler said during the community schools update, noting the total includes some students who received second pairs. Wheeler credited health services staff and school liaisons for coordinating screenings and follow-up with optometrists.
The board heard how the screenings were part of broader community-school activities that include monthly family science nights, parenting leadership classes, distribution of clothing through community closets, transportation supports, and targeted professional development. Wheeler said some elementary sites reported large single-site totals—for example, Miano had about 250 students receive glasses.
Superintendent Ritchie framed the effort as a districtwide support: "We have 11,000 students in our district. They just went and provided optometric exams for 11,000 students, and 2,300 students got glasses," he said, adding that the services reduce classroom disruptions and help students engage with learning.
Board members praised the program’s early results and urged continued tracking of outcomes and funding sustainability, since leaders said some supports are grant-funded and require future reapplication. The district said more detailed counts are being finalized and provided as approximate figures in the presentation.
Next steps announced to the board included continuation of family engagement events, ongoing vision program follow-up, and coordination with community partners to maintain and expand screening and follow-up services.
