The City of Altoona Council adopted an ordinance Oct. 20 amending Chapter 165 of the zoning code to add a definition for "shipping containers," clarifying they are considered temporary and may not be used as permanent accessory structures on private property. The vote on readings and to publish the ordinance was unanimous, 5-0.
Community Development Director John Shaw presented the amendment, saying the change was intended "to clear up language and to incorporate a definition for shipping containers to clarify that these are considered to be temporary and may not be used as permanent accessory structures on a property." The public hearing opened and closed at 6:31 p.m.; there were no public comments.
The change places an explicit definition in the zoning code, which staff said will aid consistent enforcement by city officials. Councilmembers did not request further amendments during the meeting. The ordinance passed all readings and the council voted to publish the ordinance by roll call 5-0.
The ordinance text and publication will follow the city's standard post-adoption procedures.
