Council selects CPS HR Consulting to run nationwide city-manager search

Carbondale’s City Council approved an agreement authorizing the mayor to execute a contract with CPS HR Consulting to conduct a nationwide search for the city manager position.
Staff said CPS HR and GovHR (now MGT of America) tied in scoring, but CPS HR’s record of placing more than 57% minority and/or female candidates at the executive level led staff to recommend CPS HR. Some council members expressed concern that CPS HR’s work is concentrated in other regions and argued GovHR’s Midwest experience and prior work with Carbondale made it a stronger choice. Supporters of the CPS HR recommendation said the firm’s nationwide reach and higher diversity-placement record were compelling reasons to proceed.
Council voted to accept the staff recommendation and authorize the mayor to sign the agreement.
