The Rockcastle County Board of Education honored a district teacher Thursday after the Kentucky Rural Education Association named her Kentucky Rural Educator of the Year.
Doctor Ballinger introduced the award during the boardmeeting and Rob Stafford of the Kentucky Rural Education Association described the prize: "Along with this award, you'll receive 1000 dollars for your personal award and up to $3,500 for whatever professional development you would like to select," Stafford said, and added the honoree will be nominated to the National Rural Education Association as Kentucky's candidate.
Board members, colleagues and students delivered tributes describing the winner as a committed classroom teacher who runs districtwide programs including the spelling bee and the gifted and talented initiatives. Speakers credited her with building students' confidence and with creating project-based learning that connects students to local history and community resources.
The board paused regular business to recognize the teacher and invited district and association representatives to join a future luncheon with students to celebrate the honor.
The presentation was part of the meeting's school showcase segment; no formal board action was required for the award.
