Avondale Elementary honored at La Mesa-Spring Valley board meeting; students lead pledge

At the Jan. 13 La Mesa-Spring Valley School Board meeting, students from Avondale Elementary led the pledge of allegiance and Principal Marissa Shanyo spoke about the school’s community and multilingual strengths.
"At Avondale, community and connection aren't just ideas we talk about. They're things we live," Marissa Shanyo said as she thanked families and staff for their support. Shanyo told the board Avondale serves a diverse population and noted that "over seven languages are spoken" at the school, and that many staff members are multilingual, which helps the school connect with families.
The board played a short video showcasing Avondale before Shanyo introduced several students by name for recognition, including Haroon Noor, Daisy and Daniel Ramirez Rodriguez, Cedric Saint Louis, Lily Pamohan, Sophia Dang and Lexi, who narrated the video. Board members praised the presentation and invited families to stay for the meeting.
Board members and the superintendent thanked Avondale staff and families for attending. The spotlight concluded with a brief photo opportunity and the meeting moved on to the district’s California School Dashboard briefing.
