School board approves design services agreement with DLR Group for West Park High expansion

District facilities staff told the board that an incorrect figure appeared in the packet and provided an updated cost estimate; they said reuse of an existing design yields savings on architectural fees while allowing targeted modifications to meet West Park’s needs. The staff presentation stated the district anticipates the classroom building could be completed for the 2028–29 school year, with the theater following later.

Trustees asked about restroom design and capacity. A trustee asked staff to clarify “all‑inclusive restrooms,” and district staff described floor‑to‑ceiling enclosed stalls with sinks in a shared area, noting the design increases visibility and complies with evolving state guidance while retaining traditional single‑sex restrooms for those who prefer them. Trustee questions also noted that even with the additional classroom building the campus may remain short of long‑term capacity.

Board members pressed staff on costs. A trustee observed the project estimate had risen from an earlier $50 million planning figure to about $70 million as the scope became clearer; district staff said they and the architect continue to look for savings and that the $70 million estimate represents a potential high‑end case.

Trustee (unnamed) moved to approve the design services agreement with DLR Group; Trustee Coleman seconded. The board approved the motion unanimously (5–0, with two student board members concurring).

The contract approval allows staff and DLR Group to proceed with detailed design work; trustees asked that staff continue to report on cost‑control measures and coordinate closely with school leadership during design.
