At the start of the meeting the board heard an El Capitan High showcase focused on career and technical education, college-credit opportunities and student engagement. Principal Megan Cope told trustees the site has increased CTE certifications and is working to ensure students "leave high school with a certificate in their hand," and that the school is aiming to increase student involvement by 40% (a target of about 767 engaged students).
Cope said many students are earning college credits through CCAP courses and cited an indicator that 56% of El Capitan students are currently marked as "prepared" on district Aeries/CCI measures; she described steps to increase third-year math participation and support students who are close to meeting A–G or capstone requirements.
Deputy Ledford and others described a law-enforcement academy, a one-day competition (crime-scene work, written tests and physical agility) that draws explorers and local agencies, and plans for capstone work that include report writing and exit interviews.
In a separate report the district communications lead said the department produced 152 stories during the fall, issued 29 newsletters (with a reported open rate of 72.8%), distributed roughly 413,000 emails and recorded about 2,000,000 social media interactions during the period described. The communications update highlighted student-produced podcasts and videos and said staff plan a survey to refine newsletter content and increase subscriber engagement.
Trustees praised both the El Capitan program and the communications work and encouraged staff to keep building partnerships with Merced College and local agencies.
