The Barstow Unified School District board announced Jorge Gutierrez as the districts interim superintendent. The district presentation said Gutierrezs career with Barstow Unified began in 2003 as a classroom teacher and that he later served as principal at Barstow Junior High School before becoming assistant superintendent of personnel services, the position he currently holds.
During the superintendents report, district staff said Mr. Gutierrez has led professional development supporting MTSS pillars of academics, behavior and social-emotional learning and has worked to reduce suspension rates and disproportionality. "His contract will be brought back to the board on March 24 for approval with the begin date of July 1," the district reported.
Trustees and district representatives congratulated Gutierrez at the meeting. Jorge Gutierrez responded, "Thank you," when recognized by the board.
The board did not take a final employment vote at the time of the announcement; district staff said the formal contract approval would return to the agenda on March 24. The superintendents report also listed ongoing district priorities that Mr. Gutierrez said he intends to continue, including TKthrough3 literacy work and collaboration with the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence.
