Torrance Unified superintendent highlights training, new‑teacher onboarding and emergency‑prep exercises

Highlighting student programs, Dr. Stowe described the district’s ELOP summer offerings—activities ranging from water play to yoga and swim lessons—under the leadership of Jeff Nielsen. He also detailed an international exchange in which Torrance students played scrimmages against a visiting junior team from Oshu, Japan, as part of a sister‑city relationship.
On student leadership, Dr. Stowe outlined a new Captain’s University partnership to provide season‑long leadership development and midseason debriefs for high‑school captains. He closed by describing tabletop emergency‑preparedness exercises at South High School, involving Torrance police and fire agencies, and said the joint drills improved coordination for active‑shooter and disaster scenarios.
Board members asked one clarifying question about whether CERT expansion was part of the tabletop exercises; district staff replied that CERT was not part of that tabletop, which focused on active‑shooter scenarios.
Dr. Stowe invited additional questions and thanked staff for summer work preparing schools for the return of students.
