Teachers and bargaining units 'sunshine' reopeners ahead of negotiations

Several employee bargaining units announced their initial "sunshine" reopeners to the Sequoia Union High School District board on Wednesday ahead of negotiations scheduled to begin the next day.
Edith Salvatore, who addressed the board during public comment on behalf of the Sequoia District Teachers Association, said SDTA was "sunshining our reopeners" with priorities that include salary, class size and wages and that the union looked forward to productive negotiations. "We are reopening on salary and ... class size and wages, and we look forward to productive meetings with the district starting bright and early tomorrow morning," Salvatore said.
Representatives for ASME Local 829 and AFSCME similarly listed multiple articles they planned to reopen, including leaves and hours, health and welfare, evaluation and grievance procedures, layoffs and wages. A presenter identified as Kevin summarized a long list of reopened articles for the technical/paraprofessional and maintenance-and-operations bargaining units, including reclassification, holidays and vacation language.
District staff acknowledged the presentations and said bargaining would begin imminently. No substantive bargaining proposals were debated or adopted by the board Wednesday; the item was informational and intended to publicly post proposals in advance of bargaining.
