Carla Richard, the program presenter, described hands‑on lessons where students measure, cut and prepare more than 10 recipes during the year and keep nutrition journals that document recipes and reflections. "What we're seeing consistently is increased confidence, curiosity, and willingness to try new foods," Richard said, and noted the program is designed to accommodate dietary restrictions.
Trustees asked about program staffing and training. A Boys & Girls Club representative described required background checks, live scans, mandated‑reporter training, and annual CPR/first‑aid certification for employees and volunteers. The presenter said staff shadow at club sites and cross‑train with nutrition staff so lessons are delivered safely.
Trustees also asked how the program connects to home and to academics; the presenter said students keep journals, the organization plans recipe cards and showcases where parents can view student work, and staff have discussed integrating math and science lessons (for example by using metric measurements).
The board received the presentation and trustees complimented the partnership while asking staff to consider ways to strengthen academic integration and parent engagement.
